Ana Tijoux - Volver [Official Video]

Rated French-Chilean MC Ana Tijoux takes her song "Volver" to new heights on this video from rated director B+--specifically, above the clouds over Medellin, Colombia (no Escobar jokes please). Which seems to be the natural habitat for her Bahamadia-esque flow on this track; more whispered torch song than rap in the conventional sense. Making the video was clearly a bit of a transcendent moment for Ana as well, and for this Okayplayer world premiere of the video, she shared her memories of the experience, which all came together while she was in Colombia to work with Quantic. ("Volver" is from Ana's current LP La Bala--purchase it on iTunes now: http://bit.ly/SIyztL).
"I became familiar with the work of B+ after seeing some of the documentaries produced by Mochilla about Ma Dukes, Mulatu, and Verocai. To be completely honest, I was immediately and profoundly impacted by their work. Soon I somehow became friends with B+ and now to do a project with him ... im very thankful for this.

I was in Medellin thanks to an invitation by DJ Quantic, to take part in his recordings of Ondatropica in the historic Disco Fuentes Studios. Three days full of tremendous experiences not only at this iconic place, but also with the number of extraordinary musicians that I was able to meet and collaborate with. And of course my curiosity for the city itself, I had never been before and I was lucky to get a little chance to explore and start to understand its cultural, musical, and historical impacts on Colombia and the world.

On my last morning there, B+ and I woke up extremely early with the idea to film what was his favorite song from my new album. We didn't really know what we were going to do, we just walked through the streets and he took the camera and filmed. We had been invited by some community organizers in Comuna 13 to get to know their barrio and a few things outside of the usual tourist routes, and we took the metro to its end to see what was going on.

There, amongst the beautiful people, the organization doing its terrific work, and the reality of life in the barrios of Colombia, we took to the skies with our guide on the MetroCable to see the entirety of this isolated neighborhood. We had been looking for something simple to film, and here we had it, the absolute beauty of the views over the hills that make up Medellin, with all of the humanity of Comuna 13 below.

Volver is a song that is a bit outside of the rest of the album. The music was made by my collaborator Andres Celis, and the idea was to just be open to exploring and adding different kinds of music that inspires both of us, without limits."

Ana Tijoux - La Bala (new album)

Some really exciting news from one of my favorite female artists of all time!!! and that's a strong statement cuz there are sooo many:

Nacional Records is proud to announce the January 31st release of Ana Tijoux’s highly anticipated sophomore album ‘La Bala’, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed, GRAMMY nominated debut‘1977’.

The buzz behind ‘La Bala’ has been building since Tijoux’s debut ‘1977’ bubbled up from an underground sensation into mainstream recognition, with features on the hit TV show ‘Breaking Bad’ and the soundtrack to the EA Sports’ videogame FIFA ‘11. Profiled on MTV Tr3s’ “Descubre & Download” and invited to perform on NPR’s influential “Tiny Desk Concert” series, Ana Tijoux’s “1977” was also featured as the iTunes “Single Of The Week” and was one of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke's favorite tracks, with more than 1 million views on YouTube.

Ana Tijoux made her U.S. debut performing at SXSW in 2010, and has since toured the U.S. and Europe extensively, including stops at New York’s Central Park Summerstage, San Francisco’s Outside Lands and Chicago’s Lollapalooza. During GRAMMY weekend, Ana Tijoux performed ‘1977’ with The Roots as her backing band.

The new album’s lead single “Shock” is political testimony to the massive student protests occurring in Chile and around the world.
“Writing this song, I was inspired by these social movements, writing from my perspective as a mother, musician and citizen. I thought it was important to pay homage to these protesters.”

La Bala features 11 new songs from Ana Tijoux, featuring collaborations with Academy Award winning musician Jorge Drexler, Chilean rap crew Solo Di Medina (formerly La Pozze Latina), and Cuban hip-hop group Los Aldeanos. The album was recorded in Tijoux’s hometown of Santiago Chile, and mixed and mastered in Detroit, Michigan.

Eric Bobo & Latin Bitman - Welcome to the Ritmo Machine

below updated on Sept. 15, 2011:
Eric Bobo has been doing real thangs since I can remember...matter of fact, I just saw him a couple of days ago on Sept. 3rd performing with Cypress Hills @ Rock the Bells 2011...He was killin' it big time on the drums/congas...sooo as soon I received the word announcing this album I had to check it out, especially seeing that it was a collabo with Latin Bitman from Chile...I figured this is definitely gonna sound official!! Luckily Nacional Records sent me the album along with the announcement and when I saw the tracklisting I almost had a heartache!! Sick Jacken with Ana Tijoux, WTF!??? for real? Sick Jacken has always been on my top list of emcees and so is Ana!! The Legend of the Mask and the Assassin has always been in my ipod and I always, I mean always, play it from beginning to end, as I do with Ana's debut album...I've always been promoting Ana's album even wayyyy before it was released, but anyways, the point is I was estatic!! After hearing I think the collabo is straight fire, but I'm not going to lie the whole time I was waiting to hear Ana destroy a verse. All it really ended up being was a chorus and a couple of other bars from her...a bit disappointing but hopefully there will be future collabos from them...the rest of the album is really on point...Maestro and Sangre are already some of my favorites, and Welcome to the Ritmo Machine (the title track) is a great way to set the album off...I love the blend of A Tribe Called Quest's Check the Rhyme with the congas, the scratches, etc...

definitely look out for this album because it promises to make a big buzz...not to mention it has some really notable features including Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), Sen Dog (Cypress Hil), Ana Tijoux, Money Mark & Mix Master Mike (Beastie Boys), P-Nut (311) and Sick Jacken (Psycho Realm)

Tracklist:
01. Welcome To The Ritmo Machine
02. Maestro
03. Witness This Heat (feat. Chali 2na)
04. La Calle (feat. Sick Jacken & Ana Tijoux)
05. This Day
06. Save My World (feat. Mix Master Mike)
07. Senny Sosa (feat. Sen-Dog)
08. Sangre
09. Follow Me (feat. Money Mark)
10. Sabe (feat. Pato Machete)
11. The Ooohs
12. Brazil
